My Story

Hello, I'm Latonja Grant, the author behind The Semaj Effect. My journey as a children's author began with a story that is deeply personal and forever close to my heart. Every book I write is inspired by love, faith, and the belief that every child deserves to feel valued, accepted, and proud of who they are.

I was born and raised in the Oklahoma City area and have always considered myself a country girl at heart. Life eventually brought me to the city, and through God's grace, that change led me to one of the greatest blessings of my life—Semaj.

At the time, I was working as a paraprofessional when Semaj came into my family's life. Just four months later, she moved in with my husband and me, and in August 2018, she officially became part of the Grant family. During the years we shared together, she touched the lives of everyone she met with her joyful smile, peaceful spirit, and unconditional love. Her kindness had a way of making people feel seen, appreciated, and accepted.

Although her time with us was far too short, her impact continues to inspire me every day. The Semaj Effect exists because I wanted her legacy of love, compassion, and joy to continue reaching children and families through meaningful stories.

Writing I'm Different and Proud of It was my way of sharing Semaj's spirit with the world. I wanted to create a story that reminds children that being different is something to celebrate, not something to fear. Every child has unique qualities, talents, and experiences that make them special, and I believe books can help reinforce that message in a positive and lasting way.

My hope is that every young reader who opens one of my books will discover encouragement, confidence, and the courage to embrace who they are. I also want parents, teachers, caregivers, and schools to have stories they can use to spark conversations about kindness, acceptance, empathy, and self-worth.

Looking Ahead

Although The Semaj Effect is a growing author brand, my vision reaches far beyond publishing one book. I look forward to visiting schools, participating in community events, connecting with bookstores, and building relationships with readers who believe in the power of storytelling.
