Semaj is my daughter, whom I brought home after meeting her through my work as a paraprofessional. The whole story is truly a God thing, and over time, you can learn a little more about our journey if you'd like. But for now, I would like to introduce you to Semaj. The picture above is from our last outing together, about a week before she went home to God.

Semaj was born with a rare brain disease called Moyamoya. Moyamoya is often associated with sickle cell disease, which meant that from an early age, she was already facing a life of blood transfusions, medications, and sickle cell crises. Even more frightening, she was at a high risk of suffering strokes. This is where the story behind her book, I'm Different and Proud of It, begins.

Semaj had her first stroke at the age of seven, leaving her with paralysis in her left hand. This was the first of four strokes she would endure. Her third was a massive stroke that left the entire left side of her body paralyzed. She lost her speech, her ability to walk, and once again, the use of her left hand. Her chances of survival were grim, but Semaj showed her team of doctors that, with determination and sass, she was going to fight.

She eventually regained the ability to walk, although with an altered gait, and she thrived as she discovered new ways to function using only one hand. In time, with the help of her therapists, she regained full use of her hand. She was given the opportunity to use a communication device, but once again, with that same determination and sass, Semaj created her own way of communicating. She spoke through her eyes, her smile, and the expressions that allowed those around her to understand her.

After I became her foster mom, Semaj's team of doctors told me there was something about her that they simply could not explain. She had an extraordinary sense of peace and joy that radiated through her eyes and smile. Even when facing death, she remained positive, continuing to smile and bring comfort to everyone around her.
